DESCRIPTION

The Authorization Coordinator will have the responsibility of facilitating the process of securing authorizations for the Ophthalmology clinics with regards to follow up visits, requested diagnostic testing, requested procedures and referrals to specialties outside of the Ophthalmology clinics. The Authorization Coordinator will submit referral requests to medical insurance companies utilizing current electronic systems to provide accurate documentation including physician notes, ICD-9 codes and CPT codes. The Authorization Coordinator will provide continued follow up with the insurance companies to facilitate the approval of the requested authorizations, initializing delays and assuring timely payment. Documentation of the authorizations to be included in the Epic systems to ensure accurate billing of office visits and procedures to minimize delays in the flow of revenue.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school.

  • Minimum three (3) years previous experience in a large, complex healthcare setting.

  • Experience in insurance authorization (Medi-Cal, Medi-cal TAR, Medicare, HMO).

  • Extensive knowledge of medical, surgical and anatomical terminology.

  • Demonstrated high level, administrative experience in a clinical and academic setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform at a high level of proficiency and competency.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise good judgement, identify problems, interpret policy and recommend solutions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures, including computer knowledge of the PCIS, EPIC, and IDX systems.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
